11 pupils from Ashley Primary School are marking Remembrance Day with a difference this year by creating a specialist mural at the site of a JD Joinery and Building Services construction project in South Shields.
The site at West Park in South Shields has been concealed by hoardings since construction began in the summer to create a new single-story bungalow designed by New Bold Design Ltd.
Phil Newbold, director of New Bold Design and the principal designer of West Park Lodge, contacted the Headteacher at Ashley Primary School to ask if pupils would like to use the temporary hoardings around the West Park construction site and the school took the opportunity to create artwork which would help mark Remembrance Day for the local community
As the principal contractor, JD Joinery agreed to donate all painting materials to the project as a unique way to use the hoardings as a platform for community artwork to commemorate fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day 2018.
Katie Westwood, teacher from Ashley Primary School commented: “West Park is very close to our school and having walked past the construction site frequently, we felt our talented students could use the blank space to showcase their creativity and artistic skills.
“Remembrance Day is a time for all of our pupils to learn more about the sacrifices made by our armed forces and to give thanks to those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Our pupils have had the chance to create something for the community whilst learning about the meaning behind Remembrance Day engaging in an outdoor educational opportunity they will certainly not forget.
“They have each worked incredibly hard to come up with a final design that communicates the message of Remembrance Day but also speaks to a younger generation perhaps unfamiliar with its importance. We are incredibly proud of what our pupils have created and would like to thank JD Joinery for their support in giving our pupils this opportunity.”
West Park Lodge is a single-storey home being constructed in line with Passivhaus principles by JD Joinery and Building Services and is due for completion in 2019. The property has been designed by New Bold Design Ltd as fully wheelchair accessible and a sustainable, low-energy home. The property features a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system for climate control and electrically powered by solar PV and a Tesla Powerwall battery.
JD Joinery are skilled in the construction of Passivhaus properties and are one of the only regional construction firms to have constructed Passivhaus-certified properties in addition to low-energy new build homes. The dwelling at West Park is expected to achieve Band A for energy demand on the EPC, a first for South Tyneside.
Joe Dixon, MD of JD Joinery and Building Services comments: “We are delighted with how the pupils from Ashley Primary School have brightened up our construction site with murals marking Remembrance Day.
“Given the age of the pupils involved, we have been particularly impressed with how the pupils have been able to communicate the subject matter so clearly and deliver a piece of artwork that represents the talent within their school so beautifully.
“Well done to all pupils involved and thank you for your hard work at West Park Lodge.”
