Rear Kitchen and Family Room Extension

When the sun is shining, there is nothing more inviting than throwing open your doors and making your garden a part of your everyday living space.

At this home, we helped to do just that with a single storey rear extension added to the back of the existing garage.  The new extension was turned into a new kitchen and the previous kitchen updated to become a family room as part of a more open-plan living area . With the addition of bi-fold doors and a stunning feature roof light, this is a space with real wow factor.  Given the focus of the décor, the windows were installed using an Oak Coloured Aluminium Foil for a more natural and softer overall look.

A new utility area was created to service the home and the existing garage roof was raised and renewed using a single ply membrane. We also removed the existing French doors and added in a second set of bi-fold doors in a wider opening to complement the new kitchen space and the newly revamped patio and garden area.

One particularly interesting aspect of this project was the use of brick slips.  The bricks used on the existing chimney breast were in a bad state of repair but the client like the exposed brick effect so this effect was mirrored with brick slips in other areas of the kitchen to match.  A good way to draw in the original character of the house and use it elsewhere in a way the client can appreciate.

The client, Mrs Debbie Ismay had this to say on the project:

“Now that we’re complete I wanted to write and say thank you for doing an outstanding job.  Your team has been a pleasure to work with and without exception your own staff and subcontractors have been polite, helpful and have frequently gone that ‘extra mile’ that creates truly excellent customer service.  The quality of the workmanship has been first class and we are both truly delighted with the results.  Everyone who sees the extension is highly complimentary.  My neighbours mentioned how great ‘my builders’ had been and commented on how little disruption there had been throughout. I recall being impressed by your very detailed quotation (in contrast to some competitor’s ‘finger in the air’ estimates) and am pleased to say that other than agreed additions to the scope, this was the price that we have paid. I would not hesitate to recommend your company.

“I don’t know if you operate a recognition scheme but I’d like to mention a couple of individuals:

“Kevin Hunn – Kept me well informed throughout and ensured I always knew what was happening. Great at getting back quickly to all my queries/texts/e-mails and calling by very regularly to check all was well and ensure we had no concerns.  Always accommodating to my ‘bright ideas’ and good at coming up with suggestions to improve the work/finish of the job. Coped admirably with my somewhat unhelpful, ‘difficult’ plumber!

“Peter Peacock (joiner) – Always first on site and last to leave.  Tackled every task he was given in good humour and without complaint.  E.g. he fitted 14 new internal doors and door furniture and I lose track of how many times he had to re-fix the door knobs and locks when the decorator kept removing them to varnish/paint.

“Stu and Kieran – I was very nervous about fitting the brick slips as I’d paid quite a lot of money for them and had no idea what the finished result would look like.  They were covering quite a large area (inc around a chimney breast and doorway) and no-one seemed completely sure how best to fix them to the wall.  Stu and Kieran did a truly professional job and the result is stunning.

“Sub-contractors – Tony Pringle and DMG both worked seamlessly alongside your own team and I’m very happy with the work they did.

“Finally, thank you for recommending Joelle/Howdens for kitchen design/supply and Ryan Arrowsmith for the Landscaping.  Both could not have been more helpful and the kitchen and garden looks fabulous.

“Looking forward to working with you again”
